Numbers And Counting

This learning area is part of Lilybug Learning’s home-based day care programs in Port Perry and supports early development through play and everyday experiences. To learn how these activities fit into our daily routines, visit our Day Care Programs page.

Numbers and Counting

Early numeracy skills help children make sense of their world and build a foundation for future learning. At Lilybug Learning, numbers and counting are introduced through play, everyday experiences, and hands-on activities that feel natural and engaging.

What Early Numeracy Means

Early numeracy is more than counting numbers in order. It includes understanding quantities, recognizing patterns, comparing objects, and beginning to understand how numbers relate to everyday life.

  • Recognizing numbers and quantities
  • Counting objects during play and routines
  • Understanding more, less, and the same
  • Exploring patterns, shapes, and simple sorting

Learning Numbers Through Everyday Activities

Children are naturally exposed to numbers throughout the day. Daily routines provide many opportunities to explore counting and basic math concepts in meaningful ways.

  • Counting toys, steps, or snacks
  • Talking about quantities during meals and play
  • Recognizing numbers in books, games, and the environment
  • Sorting objects by size, colour, or shape

Hands-On, Play-Based Learning

Numbers and counting activities are designed to be hands-on and playful. Children learn best when they can touch, move, and explore objects while learning new concepts.

Games, songs, and interactive activities help children build confidence with numbers while developing problem-solving and thinking skills.

Age-Appropriate Math Activities

Activities are tailored to each child’s developmental stage, focusing on exploration rather than formal instruction. Children are encouraged to learn at their own pace in a supportive, pressure-free environment.

  • Counting songs and finger plays
  • Simple number recognition
  • Basic matching and sorting activities
  • Introduction to shapes and spatial awareness
  • Early problem-solving through play

Building Confidence with Numbers

By experiencing numbers in a positive and engaging way, children develop confidence and curiosity about math concepts. Early numeracy at Lilybug Learning supports logical thinking, problem-solving, and a strong foundation for future learning in preschool and kindergarten.
