Life Skills
Life skills are the everyday abilities that help children feel capable, confident, and independent. At Lilybug Learning, life skills are supported through routines, play, and age-appropriate responsibilities that help children learn how to care for themselves, interact with others, and participate in daily activities.
What Life Skills Mean in Early Childhood
Life skills for young children are not about perfection — they are about practice. Children build independence by trying new things, repeating simple routines, and learning in a supportive environment where guidance and encouragement are part of the day.
- Self-help skills and independence
- Following routines and simple directions
- Social skills and cooperation
- Problem-solving and decision-making
Self-Help and Independence
Children are encouraged to do what they can for themselves, with support when needed. These small daily moments help children build confidence and develop important habits that prepare them for preschool and kindergarten.
- Washing hands and basic hygiene routines
- Putting on or taking off shoes and outerwear
- Cleaning up after activities
- Practising table manners and self-feeding skills
Social Skills and Emotional Growth
Life skills also include learning how to interact respectfully with others. Children practise social skills during play, group activities, and everyday routines as they learn how to communicate, cooperate, and work through challenges.
- Sharing, turn-taking, and cooperation
- Using words to express needs and feelings
- Practising patience and listening skills
- Learning respectful behaviour in a group setting
Responsibility Through Daily Routines
Daily routines give children a natural way to practise responsibility in simple, age-appropriate ways. When children participate in routines, they learn that they are capable and that their actions matter.
- Helping with simple classroom or playroom tasks
- Participating in transitions and group clean-up
- Learning to follow routines and expectations
- Building consistency and confidence through repetition
Preparing for Preschool and Kindergarten
Life skills development supports children as they prepare for preschool and kindergarten by encouraging independence, social readiness, and confidence. At Lilybug Learning, children are supported in learning these skills at their own pace, in a positive environment that helps them feel safe, capable, and proud of their progress.
